STAN’S PICK FOR JUNE 2013…
” 2008 Familia Solana Crianza (Carinena, Spain) … $10.
As I’m sitting here writing up this segment for my pick of the month, it is a beautiful day outside, I just finished walking my Ridgeback and Chihuahua. Now I’m thinking about grabbing a couple of steaks and grilling. Yes folks, it’s that time of year. Nothing goes better with a grilled steak, grilled eggplant, hamburgers or ribs then a Spanish red that doesn’t get too heavy. I believe I have found the right wine to fit the bill.
70% Garnacha and 30% Syrah this red hails from Northeast Spain in the DO (Denominacion de Origen) of Carinena. This is one of the oldest protected growing regions in Spain. The Carinena appellation or DO was created in 1932, so it has been around awhile.
Aromas of bright red currants, red cherries with hits of earth and red flowers. Fresh and lively on the palate with red berry fruit that penetrate. There is an interesting soft under-belly that is there but never takes over. A little hit of leather comes through on the mid-palate, leading into a finish of red flowers, crushed rock and white pepper that lingers in the mouth. Just a slight grip comes into play on the back-end. Nice balance of acidity and fruit with that nice minerality showing up. For ten bucks this wine is a steal! (B+)
Cheers! Stan The Wine Man
