BITS & BOBS…

I had a pretty amazing experience recently that I have to share simply because, well, it was an amazing accomplishment by a group of wine tasters. I will from time to time allow an organization that represents a good cause to auction off my services as a wine professional. I have conducted quite a few private wine events and they are always a blast. This last one I did on a neighboring island turned out to be quite different than any other.

I set this one up as a single blind tasting event. The idea is to help the group understand what to look for in each of the wines they are tasting and to emphasize the proper way to go about tasting a wine to get the most out of it. I talk about the wine regions and varietals they are examining in their glasses. This is the first go-round. I then mix up the wines in a blind format and their job is to identify each of the wines that they are tasting. With six wines I generally will get a couple of folks who get two or three correct. This group had five get four correct. Amazing! We had to then have two tie-breaker rounds and still had a tie in the end with two of the people. Now that is an astute group of tasters and my hat goes off to their attentiveness and interest. Also, the host and hostess were two of the nicest folks I have met and they did an excellent job of making sure everything went in a timely manner.

Our local Fair just finished up, but not before I had a chance to interview local wine maker Chris Lawler in front of a live audience in the main building. Chris is the new wine maker at San Juan Vineyards and although we have met and talked, I really have not had a chance to get to know him. This was my opportunity, and we had a great time talking about his approach to wine making, where he emanated from and where he garnered his wine experience. I will put the interview on my You Tube channel (Stan The Wine Man TV) on Tuesday, August 22. Make sure to check it out. We tasted four wines from the winery together as we talked including two barrel samples of his Syrah. The wines were very good and I am very excited for the bottling of the Syrah next year. It was stunning!

Susie and I continue to plan our trip to South Africa. I have a couple of interviews set up with wine makers already, and am very excited to make the trek with my lovely girlfriend to that country. She is working very hard on the side trips that we will take. There is so much to do there and thankfully she is a very good planner. I have expanded the South African wine section at Kings Market where I work, and have found some pretty amazing juice, including a Pinot Noir that rivals anything I have tasted from the Willamette Valley at a very reasonable price. There is also a Cabernet Sauvignon for fourteen bucks that will rock your palate. Stay tuned for reviews of the wines in the near future as I focus my attention on this great wine producing country.

Cheers!

FRIDAY’S THIRTEEN…

A boatload of wine

A boatload of wine

In a weeks time, I taste a boatload of wine (seriously). I lot of my friends think I’m lucky. Well, they’re right, and I wouldn’t give this job up for the world. The only thing that makes my job hard, is my feeling of responsibility to taste the samples given to me as quickly as possible and to put my reviews either in my Moleskine, on my Youtube channel (Stan The Wine Man TV), or right here on Stanthewineman.com. Here for your reading pleasure, are thirteen wines that I have reviewed in my Moleskine (good or bad), this past week.

2015 Frey Field Blend ( Mendocino, CA)… $15.

Aromas of Menthol, licorice and blackberries with an interesting hit of oatmeal. Blackberries and red berries dance together on fresh acidity with notes of blueberries trying to cut in. Polished, structured tannins support the palate show and they have a little attitude. Ball bearing notes lie underneath front to finish where notes of tobacco join in. Biodynamic and organically grown grapes. (B/B+)

2014 Frey Agriculturist Red (Mendocino, CA)… $12.

Blackberry Cola with a splash of tobacco on the nose. Light on the palate with blackberry notes front to finish. Currant notes sneak in a bit underneath the blackberry. Sweet tannins and laser sharp fruit notes. It might be light but it carries a punch. Gamay lovers wine for sure. Biodynamic and organically grown grapes. (B-)

2014 Frey Zinfandel (Mendocino, CA)… $15.

Aromas of raspberry and strawberry jam with a punch of cherries. Nice jammy edge on the palate with a fresh backbone. Hits of white pepper join the dark cherry notes Good balance and intensity of fruit. Currant and blackberry notes sneak in on the back of the mid-palate into the finish. Organically grown fruit and a very good, true to Zinfandel Zin. (B/B+)

2015 Frey Biodynamic Cabernet Sauvignon (Mendocino, CA)… ?

Currants and black cherries on the nose with a pinch of licorice. Sharp currant and dark cherry notes with a fresh underbelly. Tobacco notes join the party on the mid-palate with a kiss of licorice on the finish and a little black currant cough drop action lingering. (B/B+)

2011 Teutonic Wine Co. Pinot Noir Adams Vineyard (Chehalem Mountains, OR)… $48.

Aromas of Cola, cinnamon, Asian spice, bark and cherries (awesome!). Balanced acidity is in harmony with Cola, Asian spice and cherry notes. Red flower and licorice notes sneak in underneath front to finish. Good balance and well-integrated. (A-)

2015 Teutonic Wine Co. Whole Cluster Pinot Noir Laurel Vineyard (Chehalem Mountains, OR)… $30.

Cherries, cranberries and a kiss of leather on the nose joined by hits of orange peel and Root Beer. Root Beer and cherry notes dominate the palate with cranberries and a little bark action joining in. Root Beer notes linger with a touch of orange peel. Acidity keeps this baby fresh in the mouth. (B-/B)

2015 Teutonic Wine Co. “Pigs and Swords” White (Willamette Valley, OR)… $24.

Aromas of mushrooms and apple with a kiss of white flowers. Acidity gives it a laser sharp feel on the palate. It is both sweet and dry at once with vibrant notes of honey, peaches and apricots on a bed of white flowers and tangerines. The sweet notes are kept in check by solid citrus notes making this a wild, yet enjoyable ride in the mouth. Tangerine notes linger. 60% Pinot Noir, 35% Muller-Thurgau, 5% Chasselas (A-)

2015 Teutonic Wine Co Pinot Gris Crow Valley Vineyard (Willamette Valley, OR)… $21.

Aromas of apples and a hint of pear. A touch sugarfied on the palate with solid acidity that sharpens it up. Notes of apple, lemon and tangerine dance around the palate leading into a steely, fresh, vibrant finish. (B+/A-)

2014 Wines of Substance Super Substance Sauvignon Blanc (Ancient Lakes, WA)… $20.

Hits of pears and apples on the nose with an herbal component sneaking in. Dried herbs and white pepper notes on a bed of pears on the palate with a backdrop of apples. A little odd on the palate due to the oak treatment, but it’s fresh underneath. Not a Sauv. Blanc for everyone, but well made. (B/B+)

2014 Mersoleil Silver Unoaked Chardonnay (Monterey County, CA)… $22.

Figs and pears all day on the nose with a little hit of banana. Smooth and round on the palate with a fresh finish that shows some weight. Sweet fig notes front to finish with a backbone of ripe pears. This baby is fruit-forward but certainly a 10 in the delicious category. (B-)

2015 Custard Chardonnay (North Coast, CA)… $18.

Aromas of Creme Brulee, orange Sorbet, Rubber Band and hits of mint. Baking spice, figs and pears on the palate. Seamless flow across the palate with oak in the background that is nicely integrated with the fruit. Fig and pear notes linger on the finish. Another “10” in the delicious category. ((B-)

2016 14 Hands Rose`(Columbia Valley, WA)… $13.

Aromas of strawberries, cherries, herbs and orange peel. Orange peel notes lie underneath a bed of strawberries on the palate. There is a slight hit of Bazooka on the mid-palate leading into a citrus driven, dry finish. Sweet fruit up front and then finishes dry. Good balance. A great Rose` for those just breaking into the category. (B)

2014 Wines of Substance Cabernet Sauvignon (Washington State)… $17.

Black tea and toasty currants on the nose with a backdrop of dark cherries and licorice. Dark fruit notes rest on solid acidity and chalky tannins. Currants, licorice and Kirsch notes front to finish. Good concentration, balance and structure. (B)

Cheers!

STAN’S PICK FOR AUGUST 2017..,.

This will most likely be my last white wine pick until next spring, unless of course one comes along that smacks my palate so hard I have to choose it. This months pick has been on my radar before and I was not surprised when Mike tasted me on it that it became an immediate candidate for my pick of the month. It hails from Corsica, an island in the Mediterranean Sea that is part of France. It lies Southeast of that country and just north of Sardinia. It is fast becoming well known for producing some outstanding wines, of which this months pick is a fine example.

2016 Domaine Vetriccie White 50% Vermentino-50% Chardonnay (Corsica, France)… $8.

Perfumed aromas of melon, pears and white flowers with a hint of orange blossom. Crisp and lively on the palate with notes of tangerine, melon pears and white flowers front to finish that penetrate and expand on the mid-palate. There is a nice spine of balanced acidity and hits of wet stone underneath. Finishes dry and mouth-watering. I’m thinking shellfish here or a nice summer salad with some Gorgonzola. A killer price for the quality of wine you get. (B+)

P.S. Sorry there is no picture but for some reason my I-phone and computer did not want to cooperate.

Cheers!

BITS & BOBS

I think I am back on the You Tube train. After changing editing programs and learning how to use it (I still need some help), and figuring out what was causing the noise distortion on some of my episodes, I am happy to say that I am back at it. I appreciate your patience and support during this time. I recently published episode 321 which is featuring wines partially aged in whiskey barrels. Check it out.

My services as a wine professional and entertainer were auctioned off at an event to further education of children. I am always happy to donate my time for a good cause. We held the single blind tasting at a beautiful spot outside of someones home. It was a very fun event and I am sure the group that attended walked away with just a little more knowledge about the wine world and how to analyze the wine in their glass. I want to thank the group for their participation and for being such a fun bunch.

I have to say that the weather this July has been phenomenal. Because of the sunshine and despite the dismal ferry service to the San Juans, Rose` sales have been out of sight. I have sold more Rose` this summer than ever before and it doesn’t look like the trend will end anytime soon. I had mentioned in the past that Rose` sales were strong this past winter, which is a sign that folks are really understanding its value as a food wine. I love Rose` for that very reason. It’s fantastic with shellfish, salmon, salads and fowl among other things. And yes, it is one of the best wines to enjoy outside on a warm summer day.

I tasted a Pinot Grigio recently that blew my mind! I know that’s hard to believe considering my comments about this wine in the past. However, I am an open-minded wine drinker, so I gave this New Zealand white a chance. It was amazing and made my pick of the week on my Seattle P.I. blog “The Blue Collar Wine Guy”. Take a few minutes to read my review.

Lastly, my girlfriend and I are planning a trip to South Africa in April of 2018. I am really looking forward to checking out this side of the world and taking my camcorder along to shoot a few You Tube episodes, hopefully including an interview or two with local wine makers or winery owners. It will be harvest time there which is always one of the best times to visit wineries. I have been looking into putting more SA wines into my set at the store and have found some amazing values and quality juice. I discovered a Pinot Noir from this region called “The Goose” which I believe stands up to most Willamette Valley Pinot Noir I have tasted in the past year. It’s only $25. bucks and it rocks! If you’re looking for a solid Pinot, I encourage you to give this a try. I believe you will be surprised at how good it really is.

Cheers!
