STAN’S PICK FOR FEBRUARY…

When it comes to a pick for the month, there are two countries that I can always count on for great values. Spain of course has dominated my pick choices. Where else can you find such great variety at such great prices? Another area that I can find great values and variety on a consistent basis is Portugal. Known for its Port production and of course the “green wine” Vinho Verde, it is fast becoming well-known for outstanding red blends from Dao, Douro and further south in Alentejo. There are many other wine regions in this small country, but when it comes to putting out fantastic red blends, the aforementioned regions do an amazing job, and the prices are crazy.

Esporao Winery, led by wine maker David Baverstock is leading the way in the wine region of Alentejo. I had the opportunity to visit Esporao and let me tell you, it is cutting edge. David believes in letting the wines speak for themselves as well as the vintage. Any winery that allows vintage variation without trying to manipulate the juice to fit a certain flavor profile is going to get a thumbs up from me. This “Pick of the Month” is a classic example. I have tasted several vintages of this wine, and this vintage beats them all.

Nice complexity for the price and a seriously long finish that is almost chewy with a big hit of tobacco lingering. Are you serious? All this for eight bucks. A blend of Castelao, Moreto & Trincadeira (Tinta Amarela) B+/A-

About Stan The Wine Man

I am a blue collar wine guy who has been in the biz for over twenty years. I work at a store in a tourist destination stop. I work hard at finding the best wine for the money. I love the challenge of learning my customer's palate so I can find the best wine for them, whether it is Petrus or white zinfandel. Cheers!
