This month, as the weather cools and people return to meals that call for red wine, I’ve found a little gem. This Nero D’Avola from Sicily has a bit of age on it, but that only makes it more interesting. Produced using organically grown grapes, this wine rolls in at an excellent price and is a perfect wine to pair with things like spaghetti, pizza, or burgers with a bit of blue cheese. If you are still grilling out despite the cooler weather, it will also pair well with grilled meat.
2019 Moncaro Nero D’Avola (Sicily)… $12.
There is a touch of rust and leather on the nose, joined by notes of raspberries, cherries and plums. The nose might be a bit funky for some, but be patient; it is a beauty on the palate. Cherry, raspberry and plum notes shine on the palate with a kiss of red flowers and spice. Rust and leather notes join up on the mid-palate, into the finish. The tannins are soft, yet structured, giving it nice balance. The finish lingers with spice notes sneaking in on the back end. This is a screaming at this price. (B-)
Cheers!
